Malayalam actor Darshana Rajendran delivered two commercial successes in 2022 – Hridayam and Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey. One of probably the most bankable actors in Mollywood, Rajendran’s next, Purusha Pretham will stream on SonyLIV from Friday.
In an unique chat with NewsBytes, she talks about the cause behind the success of low-budget Malayalam films, the significance of field office numbers, and more.
Excerpts.
What made you say sure to ‘Purusha Pretham’?
It’s a slow-burner darkish comedy. I was initially approached by Prashant Alexander, who plays the lead and can be backing the movie. I had heard a lot about Krishand’s movie, Aavasavyuham. When Krishand narrated the story of Purusha Pretham to me, it clicked immediately.
The darkish comedy space is one thing I personally enjoy, and thus I was wanting forward to it.
As an actor, how essential is it to trust director?
I am an individual who fully trusts the director and his/her imaginative and prescient. I’m a very director-dependent actor who goes to a movie set with an empty thoughts space and lets the director mildew me as per the film’s want.
Acting turns into a fun course of when you fully trust your director or co-stars. I’m really fortunate to have worked with such directors.
How essential are box workplace numbers to you?
I’m very focused on the work I do and verify out to not think exhausting about different factors that are not in my control. Those (box office numbers) are issues which might be a step away for me.
Of course, I need the most effective for my movies when it comes to cash. But for me, it’s the method of acting and filmmaking that I give consideration to.
Why are low-budget Malayalam movies more successful than big-budget movies?
Films like Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey aren’t centered on the actors however purely on the story. It’s the content that will get all the attention. Purusha Pretham is also about that.
Basically, you also can make an excellent film with out having big stars.
With Malayalam cinema, I feel we’re getting to strive this a lot. It’s a nice time to be in the industry.
How did OTT form your career?
C U Soon, co-starring Fahadh Faasil, came right in the midst of a pandemic. Shooting it was a very completely different expertise for me. There are plenty of my pals who know that I am an actor but have not seen much of my work.
C U Soon was the first time that my pals watched my work. And thus, I credit OTT a lot.
Where do you map Malayalam cinema on the world map?
Malayalam cinema is reaching locations, internationally. It has a rising viewers across the globe.
For instance, after I was in Sri Lanka, I realized how big a thing Malayalam movies were. Everyone is well-updated with movies there, and in fact, they’ve a separate group for Malayalam movies.
It only goes to level out that we are getting a wider reach of the audience.
